Final scission

Ultra-Orthodox Jewish men wearing replicas of striped Nazi concentration camp uniforms and yellow David stars take part in a protest against what they see as persecution of devout Jews in Jerusalem's Mea Shearim neighbourhood in this December 31, 2011. Israeli society could be torn apart if disputes between ultra-Orthodox and less observant Jews continue to heat up, Israel's religious affairs minister said on January 4, 2012.

Beit Shemesh Day II

Israelis take part in a protest against violence by religious zealots trying to impose their religious code on the town of Beit Shemesh, near Jerusalem December 27, 2011. Several thousand pro-democracy activists protested on Tuesday in the flashpoint town at a rally organised after an outburst of public anger when an eight-year-old girl said on national television that ultra-Orthodox men had spat at her on her way to school, accusing her of immodest dress. The placard reads, "Don't give up on Beit Shemesh."
